The Efficio Story

A case study in grit, focus, and the power of specialist excellence — from zero clients to a global consulting firm.

Six Colleagues. Zero Clients. Maximum Conviction.

In 2000, during the dot-com crash — arguably the worst possible time to start a business — Alex and five colleagues left the security of A.T. Kearney to launch Efficio Consulting.

They had no clients, limited funding, and a market that was contracting. What they did have was a deep conviction that there was an unmet need: a premium, specialist procurement consultancy that could combine big-firm rigour with niche expertise and genuine accountability.

90% of businesses fail. The odds were stacked against them. But they had something that couldn't be bought: grit.

The Ford of Europe Deal

In the early days, one deal changed everything. Ford of Europe offered Efficio a project — but on extraordinary terms: a 100% "at risk" fee structure. If Efficio didn't deliver measurable savings, they wouldn't get paid a penny.

It was a bet-the-company moment. The team delivered — generating significant savings for Ford and, in doing so, earning what effectively became the firm's second-round funding. It was proof of concept, credibility builder, and survival mechanism all in one.

This willingness to put skin in the game became a hallmark of the Efficio culture.

Building a Firm People Want to Join

Alex believes that a consultancy is only as good as its people. At Efficio, the focus was always on creating a collegiate, non-arrogant culture — a place where talented people could build genuine careers, not just collect stamps on their CVs.

This meant building a clear career ladder, investing in professional development, and fostering an environment where people were empowered to do their best work. The result: exceptional retention rates and a reputation as an employer of choice in the procurement consulting space.
